IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Sydney
Hoffmann
January 3, 1952 – November 9, 2022
Sydney Jean Hoffmann of Chevy Chase, Maryland passed away at home on November 9, 2022.
She was born on January 3, 1952 in Simsbury, Connecticut where she grew up. Her family was always so very important to her, and their home at One Hopmeadow Street was the hub for her four siblings, their many friends, and an abundance of pets. Sydney spoke often with vivid memories about growing up in the country, exploring the woods with her brothers, the beautiful garden of her father, Arthur Hoffmann, Sr., a landscape architect, and the endless discussions of her friends with her mother, Edna "Edsel" Halloran Hoffmann, both deceased. She was devoted to her sisters Emmy Hunt of Portland, ME, and Jennifer Beard of Philadelphia, PA, and to her brothers Arthur Hoffmann, Jr. of Buford, SC, and twin brother Greg Hoffmann of Colebrook, CT, and to her many nieces and nephews. No one could criticize them but Sydney. South School and Simsbury High School were special places for her where she made many lifelong friends.
She attended Georgetown University where she received her undergraduate degree, Master's degree in Philosophy, and law degree. Following law school, Sydney clerked for Chief Judge William Pryor on the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. She then joined the law firm Dunnells, Duvall, Bennett and Porter where she met her husband David Krakoff. She was dedicated to her core to their two children, Joseph, 30, of Brooklyn, NY, and Noa, 27, of Cambridge, MA. Sydney was the command center for her family, directing the lives of David, Joe and Noa from the control panel on her Mac at her desk in their kitchen. Sydney particularly loved her family home in Wellfleet, MA where she spent countless hours watching the Ospreys fly over the water. Sydney was an accomplished attorney serving as an Assistant United States Attorney for the District of Columbia, and then as a criminal defense attorney working with Plato Cacheris for many years, and finally in her own criminal appellate practice.
Donations in Sydney's memory may be made to Simsbury High School, attention Beth Jarvis, 34 Farms Village Road, Simsbury, CT, 06070; and to the Mid-Atlantic Innocence Project, https://exonerate.org/give
