Obituary

Toby Waldman (née Tillie Mushinsky), 96, passed away on November 5, 2022 in Leesburg, VA. She was born in Greenfield Park, NY, to Dina and Meyer Mushinsky, both of blessed memory, where she grew up in a boarding house on a farm and attended a one-room schoolhouse.

Toby married Irving Waldman of blessed memory on February 28, 1953, and had five children whom she loved "more than life itself," as she would always say. She is survived and forever loved by her five children, Estella, Jack, Ralph, Jaime, and Jessica; nine grandchildren; and five great-grandchildren.

Toby, who never learned to drive, met Irving by hitchhiking in the Catskill Mountains where she grew up. Toby and Irving raised their family in the Catskills and lived in Florida for many years after retirement. Toby and Irving both had an incredible work ethic and worked hard in everything they did to provide for their family. They both tended their huge vegetable garden and fruit trees, raising the most delicious vegetables and fruits. Large garden beds, depending on the season, of tulips, zinnias, or dahlias beautified their neighborhood in Woodbourne, NY. Toby enjoyed picking huge bouquets of assorted dahlias to give as gifts. She treasured flowers of all kinds.

Toby was fluent in "Jewish" and frequently used colorful Yiddish phrases when the time was right. She was an excellent cook and could make delightful meals without a recipe. She had a beautiful singing voice and passed on her musical talent to her children. She loved movies, F. Scott Fitzgerald's books, and taking long rides on country roads.

Toby lived 96 years, 10 months, and 10 days or around 3,056,659,200 seconds. She might appreciate those statistics as she had a penchant for numbers and had grapheme-color synesthesia (she envisioned a specific color for every number).

In her later years, she often expressed concern about having done the "right thing" in her life. Given the adoration she receives from her family and extended family, her immense love, beauty, talent, intelligence, and dedication was absolutely the right thing, then, now, and forever.
