IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Wendy
Goldberg
July 18, 1942 – October 12, 2022
Wendy Goldberg, 80, of Potomac, Maryland died at home on Wednesday 12 October 2022 from multiple health complications surrounded by her loving family including her husband Ron, son Kenneth, son Michael (Lauren), son Daniel (Mary Lynn), and daughter Lauren (Michael). She will also be greatly missed by grandchildren, Ethan, Spencer, Bennett, Zackary, Talia, Aiden, Mia and Phinley.
Wendy was born and raised in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area, the daughter of Ben and Mildred Foster, and grew up with her sister Adele (also now deceased). Wendy demonstrated early her strong academic abilities by skipping a year of elementary school as well as her love of music when studying at the well-known Settlement Music School of Philadelphia. She graduated from Haverford High School at the age of 16 and went to Penn State University where she majored in teaching and foreign languages. After graduating, she taught French, Spanish, and Science at high schools near Philadelphia, Columbus, Ohio, and Washington, D.C. During this time she also was able to earn her Master's Degree in Language and Linguistics from Georgetown University.
Wendy married Ron Goldberg in 1966 and they were together for over 56 years. Their first child Kenneth was born in 1970, followed by Michael a year later, and Daniel two years after that. Daughter Lauren was born in 1977. Wendy became a full-time Mom with all the responsibilities that entailed, but still took time to sponsor foreign students in visits to the US and edit religious newsletters among other things.
Throughout her life Wendy had many interests. She was an avid game player, with bridge, Scrabble and Consecutive at the top of her list. She also loved attending theater events but had a particular fondness for live music.
She passed down her love of music to her children. She insisted that all of them learn how to play the piano. There was some initial resistance, but the end result was very positive. All four of the children became adept, not just with the piano, but in playing other instruments, singing, and otherwise performing and presenting in public.
During the mid-1980s, Wendy accompanied Ron on a foreign assignment to Belgium and while there she worked at the US Embassy in Brussels. On their return home, Wendy accepted a position as an Editor at the Central Intelligence Agency where she remained and made an important contribution to US security for over 30 years. The major challenge was that if one is editing the work of very bright people who have more than a vested interest in what they say, and they are informing senior US government officials, including the President, an Editor has to be not just accurate but able to do the job without offending the author. This Wendy was able to do very well indeed.
