Claudette L. Horwitz of Rockville, MD, passed away peacefully on the morning of June 7, 2022. She is survived by her daughter, Michele (Bruce) Cornwell, and her son, Alex (Shelly) Horwitz. Claudette was predeceased by her husband, Herbert R. Horwitz, and her son, David R. Horwitz. She leaves behind six grandsons: Daniel, Benjamin, Michael and Joseph of Rockville, and Nicholas and Jacob of Johns Creek, GA. Also mourning her loss is her sister, Jacqueline Freeman of California, and brother-in-law Michael Horwitz of Michigan.
Born in 1932 and raised in Washington, D.C., by French immigrants (Leon P. Leveque and Marie-Louise Leveque), Claudette lived a long life immersed in the beauty of classical music. As a young woman she was a church organist. After her marriage, she continued to share her incredible gift for music, teaching piano nearly her entire life from the music studio in her home in Rockville. Claudette was still teaching her beloved students until a few years ago when blindness forced her retirement. Her dedication to her hundreds of students over the years is her most profound accomplishment. She was also a former President of the Maryland State Music Teachers Association and served MSMTA in nearly every capacity over decades.
Claudette loved music, fine food, and excellent scotch. She adored all her dogs, but most especially Chelsea, a beautiful Collie who for years greeted students as they arrived at the front door. She was beloved by her family, and we tried to show that each day. She was an excellent teacher, an accomplished woman, a gracious friend, and she will be missed by all of us.
On Saturday, July 30, 2022, at 1:00 pm, please join us to remember Claudette at a Celebration of Life, to be held at the Norbeck Memorial Gardens Chapel, 16225 Batchellors Forest Rd., Olney, MD. A private inurnment will follow. She will rest eternally alongside her husband and son.
