Eleanor F. Getter, 90, beloved mother, devoted grandmother, cherished wife, incomparable aunt, died Monday Feb. 15 after a short illness. Although she moved to Silver Spring in 2017 after her husband Richard died, she remained a New Yorker, forever proud of her Brooklyn roots. A woman of remarkable strength and fortitude, she battled vision issues for more than 30 years yet remained fiercely independent. Unable to see the faces of people she loved, or even cracks in the sidewalk, she managed to live alone at Riderwood Village, baking her perfect pecan pies until the very end, balancing her checkbook to the penny, and using her green thumb to turn her apartment into a garden. Had she been born in a different era and gone to college, she would have transformed the financial world. Still, she retired as vice president for finance at FALA Direct Marketing on Long Island. A true woman of valor, she believed strongly in right and wrong, working for civil rights as a young mother in the 1950s, and supporting the Anti-Defamation League her entire life. She treated all people with kindness, no matter the color of their skin, or country of origin. A wonderful listener, she made friends wherever she went. Married for 67 years, she adored her family and is survived by her sons, Neil (Patricia) and Keith, her daughter Lisa (Jonathan) Peterson, her beloved grandchildren, Maggie (Kevin) Martin, Matthew (Stacy) Getter, Sammy Peterson, Djasi Arias, her step-grandchildren, Hannah and Sara Peterson, her great-grandchildren, Maeve and Cole Martin, and Julia and Liena Getter, and many nieces and nephews. Burial will be private in New Jersey. Contributions in her honor can be made to the Anti Defamation League or Guiding Eyes for the Blind.
