Gloria G. Cole died in her home in Bethesda on September 17, 2020. She was a remarkable woman. Born in Mt. Vernon, New York, she attended New York City Public Schools and in 1944, she graduated from Barnard College, Phi Beta Kappa, with a B.A. in mathematics. She put it to use working for the Sylvania Electronic Research Laboratory and serving from 1949-52 in the Defense Department as a mathematician for the Weapons System Evaluation Group. While raising two boys, she joined the League of Women Voters, and ultimately became the President of the Montgomery County and then the Maryland League. She served on numerous boards, including as a Director of the American Judicature Society and eight years on the Maryland Appellate Judicial Nominating Commission. Though a nonlawyer, she received an award from the Maryland Bar Foundation for her work on the merit selection of judges. She died at 96, survived by two sons, three grandchildren and one great-grandchild.
