On Wednesday, October 20, 2021, Irene Schlesinger Berg of Chevy Chase, Maryland passed away peacefully. Born on December 28th, 1928 in Berehove, Hungary. She was a survivor of Reichenbach/Langenbielau, Hamburg, and Auschwitz. After liberation, she and her two sisters of blessed memory (Florence Golden and Helen Yonkovitz) spent several years in Sweden via a displaced persons program before coming to America in 1948. She was a tough cookie, known for her appreciation of beautiful things, good food, a love of entertaining and never shying away from offering her opinion to anyone (solicited or not). Preceded in death by her beloved husband, real estate developer and fellow holocaust survivor, Max Berg, and her first grandson, Adam Berg. Irene is survived by her three children, Alan (Debra) Berg, Steven Berg and Roxanne (Steve) Whitaker; grandchildren Dana Berg, Lisa (Jeffrey) Stanton, Bobby Berg, Andrew Berg, Ali (Amanda) Holst, Jason (Amanda) Whitaker; her greatest grandchildren (as she adoringly called them) Max and Maya Stanton. A graveside service will take place on Sunday, October 24, 1:00pm at Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park in Clarksburg, MD. Memorial contributions may be made in Irene’s memory to Holocaust Memorial Museum or National Council of Jewish Women.
