Louis H. Kornhauser, born March 23, 1920, passed away on October 21, 2021, at the age of 101. Lou loved his work, his family, his friends and his Jewish Heritage. He was the loving husband of Estelle (Babe) Kornhauser, who died in 1997 and Dorothy Cooper Kornhauser with whom he shared the last 21 years of his life. Lou was devoted to his daughter, Judy (Martin) Protas, his son, Robert (Iris) Kornhauser, four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and six great-grandchildren.
After earning degrees at Wilson Teacher’s College and Columbia University, he proudly served 4 years in the United States Army in WWII, including 22 months in the South Pacific theatre.
As an educator, Lou was hired as the first male elementary school teacher in the District and the principal of a segregated school following the landmark decision in Brown v. Board of Education. As Director of a Ford Foundation national program, he worked to improve the educational lives of low-income citizens. After retirement from the D.C. School System, he served in an executive capacity at the School of Education at George Washington University. In private life, Lou was president of the Leisure World Lions Club and a grandfatherly fixture at Washington Hebrew Congregation where he received an Avodah Award for Temple and Community Service.
Graveside funeral services and burial will occur on October 25, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. at Mount Lebanon Cemetery in Adelphi, Maryland. Due to covid restrictions, Shiva will be limited to the immediate family. Contributions may be made to the Tikun Olam Fund of Washington Hebrew Congregation.
