Lynn Michael Obituary

MICHAEL

LYNN MICHAEL passed away peacefully on September 22, 2022. She was 91. Born Yetta Simon on May 25, 1931 in Washington, DC, the youngest of 11 children of Samuel and Sarah Simon, she subsequently changed her name to Lynn. A graduate of Western High School, she met her future husband, Jerrold Michael, a veteran of the U.S. Navy during World War II and engineering student at George Washington University, in 1948.  Their first date was a dinner dance at the Wardman Park Hotel. They married on March 17, 1951, in Washington shortly after Jerrold completed a Master’s Degree in Engineering at Johns Hopkins and was commissioned as an Ensign in the U.S. Public Health Service (USPHS). The couple honeymooned in Mexico and then settled into their first USPHS post in Phoenix, Arizona and then Atlanta, Georgia at the Centers for Disease Control before moving back to Washington, D.C. in 1959. Lynn supported her husband as he rose to become a Rear Admiral in 1964 at age 37, the youngest Flag Officer in USPHS history. Retiring from the USPHS in 1971, the couple, along with their two sons, moved to Honolulu, Hawaii where Jerrold became a Professor and Dean of Public Health at the University of Hawaii School of Public Health. This would be their home for the next 25 years. Lynn was a breast cancer survivor during the early 1980s who then turned her efforts into supporting the health and stigma reduction for other breast cancer survivors in Hawaii as part of the American Cancer Society Reach to Recovery Program. Lynn was recognized many times by the ACS for her tireless work in supporting the women of Hawaii. The couple returned to the DC area in November 1995 where Jerrold continued his academic public health career and the couple devoted themselves to family. As the youngest of two large immigrant families, they became a pillar of strength for their extended families as the Greatest Generation aged and passed away. Lynn is survived by her son Nelson (Madeline) Michael, grandchildren, Joseph (Stacey), Karen (Ian), Joshua and Claire Michael, and great-grandchildren, Dale Michael and Sophia Michael. Lynn was predeceased by her husband Jerrold after 67 years of marriage and her oldest son, Scott (Mary). Graveside services and interment will be held on Thursday, September 29 starting at 12 noon at Judean Memorial Gardens in Olney, Maryland. Donations can be made to the America Cancer Society: donate3.cancer.org. Services entrusted to Sagel Bloomfield Danzansky Goldberg Funeral Care. www.sagelbloomfield.com
