Michael Marcus

July 6, 1944 ~ June 6, 2022 (age 77)

Michael Stephen Marcus passed away June 6, 2022, at Reston Hospital Center.  He was born July 6, 1944, in Charleston, WV, the only child of Evelyn Bortz Marcus and Samuel Philip "Phil" Marcus.  They moved to Trenton, NJ, where Mike graduated from Trenton High. He attended Franklin and Marshall in Lancaster, PA., where he was captain of the tennis team and graduated in 1966.  He earned his J.D. from Villanova University Law School and began a 50-year career as a law clerk to Judge Richard B. Kellam in the U.S. District Court in Norfolk, VA. Over the next many years he was in law firms in DC and Northern Virginia, his last being Akin, Gump, Strauss, Hauer, and Feld in DC, where he headed the toxic torts practice. He had a notable career as a trial attorney, with many memorable cases and projects.  Among his favorites were working with Alyeska Pipeline Service Company to get environmental permits for the Alaska Pipeline; the crash of the Boeing C5-A aircraft taking orphans out of Saigon, where he represented the surviving orphans; and a pro-bono lawsuit representing victims of a terrorist attack on a bus in Israel, for which we traveled to Israel and interviewed survivors and families of the deceased.
Other than his work, Mike loved to travel, whether it was enjoying a hike in the Alps, cycling in Tasmania and China, sitting on a beach on the Big Island or not enjoying being rescued by peasants when a monsoon hit in the Himalayas or running out of airplane fuel in the wilds of Alaska. His other passion was his animal kids.  He loved his five labrador retrievers, his cats, and Eli, the death row puppy we rescued in 2014.
Mike leaves behind his wife of 46 years, Stephanie, who shared his life of adventure and his love of animals.  Mike was a strong believer in God and Judaism, so we entrust him to God's care now.
