Moises Nahum Steren passed away peacefully surrounded by family at the age of 88 on November 18, 2023 at his home in the District of Columbia.
Moises was the youngest of four children born in Salta, Argentina to Abraham and Malka Steren. He was educated in a Jewish day school and subsequently completed medical school while finishing military service in the Argentine Navy. After medical school Moises became a family medicine physician and married the love of his life Perla Wurm. Moises moved to the United States with Perla and their blossoming family to further specialize in obstetrics and gynecology. Although originally intending to return to Argentina, Moises and his family spent the next nearly 60 years in Maryland.
Moises started a medical practice after residency. In a career spanning more than 40 years, Moises was responsible for the delivery of thousands of infants in Montgomery County, Maryland and the care of their mothers. He was involved in advancing health care throughout the county as chairman of several obstetrics and gynecology departments and a member of several hospital medical executive committees. He was always on the front line of advancing health care and was the first to introduce laparoscopy to Montgomery county. Later in his career, and during retirement, Moises volunteered at a Spanish free clinic providing health care for the indigent.
Moises could be found most weekends alternating between the tennis courts and golf course, followed by a dip in the pool with one or more of his grandchildren. His true passion was spending time with his family. Moises and his wife Perla shared a love for traveling, instilling a sense of adventure upon their children and grandchildren. Moises was front row for every life achievement that his children and grandchildren had, whether sporting events, graduations, or starting a family.
Moises is survived by his beloved wife of 64 years, Perla Steren; his four children, Albert Steren (Diane), Fabiana Steren Offit (Howard ), John Steren (Lisa), and Marc Steren (Stephanie); his ten grandchildren, Joshua, David, Michelle, Alexander (Frances Steren), Benjamin, Carly, Rachel, Ian, Jack and Logan; and his great granddaughter Margot Joan Steren.
A funeral will be held on Monday, November 20, 2023 at Congregation B’nai Tzedek in Potomac, Maryland at 1:00 p.m., followed by an interment at the Garden of Remembrance Memorial Park in Clarksburg, Maryland. The family will sit shiva at the home of Fabiana and Howard Offit at 5102 Manning Drive, Bethesda, Maryland 20814 at 7:30 p.m. on Monday, November 20th and Tuesday, November 21st.
