Pamela Goldberg Obituary
GOLDBERG, PAMELA (Procuniar) 1942-2018 After a long illness.
Pam was born in Chicago in 1942 to Ruth R. And William C. Procuniar. When she was a child, the family moved to the District of Columbia, eventually settling in Wheaton. Pam was a graduate of Wheaton High School, The University of Chicago, and The University of Pennsylvania Law School. Pam's career was long and varied: she was a law professor, a private practice attorney, and a mentor. Pam was committed at all times to public service and civil rights, even taking a temporary job in 2007 at the Department of Interior, Bureau of Indian Affairs.
Throughout her life, Pam was dedicated to civil rights; she never missed at opportunity to help others, or stand up for her beliefs. As a middle-school student on a tour of the US Capitol, she refused to shake the outstretched hand of Senator Joseph McCarthy. At the University of Chicago she led sit-ins at segregated property held by the University. Pam also helped found and run a tutoring service for under-served children of color living in the Hyde Park area. She was active in national student government as well--her peers at that time were some of the best and the brightest: Bernie Sanders, Ed Garvey, and Cokie Boggs.
More than anything else, however, Pam was an adoring mother who instilled in her children the values she so cherished: freedom of speech, social justice, and the history of the Jewish people. Pam is survived by her devoted husband of 51 years, Ira M. Goldberg, whom she met in at the University of Pennsylvania Law School; by her adoring children, Sarah Goldberg (Doug Lepro) of Wheaton, Rachel Goldberg (Paul Glenn) also of Wheaton, and by the lights of her life, her cherished grandchildren William, Fiona, and Cordelia Goldberg. Pam is further survived by her nephew, David Procuniar, of NYC, and his daughter, Sadie Slocum; and by her brother-in-law, Lee Mayhew.
Pam was preceded in death by her parents, and by her cherished brother, Stephen "Bucky" Procuniar, her beloved sister Sharon L. Mayhew, and her sister-in-law Carolyn Procuniar.
Pam was a beacon of generosity, hope, and kindness to all whom she encountered. She was generous, brilliant, and pure of heart.
A memorial gathering is being planned for December.
In lieu of flowers, please donate in Pam's memory to the civil rights charity of your choice.
