Walter L. Gold of North Bethesda Maryland passed away on October 12, 2020 after a brief illness. He was 84.
Born in Cincinnati, Ohio to William and Bernice (Elman) Gold, Walter was a graduate of Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School and a US Army veteran.
Walter volunteered in various capacities for the Bethesda-Chevy Chase Rescue Squad and the Jewish War Veterans of the USA.
Mr. Gold was also a long-time member of the Friendship Fire Association, a volunteer organization that supports the DC Fire and EMS Department by operating a canteen truck at major fires and large public events. He was a familiar sight at emergency scenes. In addition, he was instrumental in the creation of the DC Fire and EMS Museum, securing space on the top floor of a Capitol Hill firehouse.
Walter followed in the steps of his father, a columnist for the Washington Post, and pursued a career in journalism. He was a reporter for The Washington Star and The Washington Times, a producer for WTOP-TV (now WUSA-TV) and later became a public information officer for the DC Metropolitan Police Department and the US Department of Transportation.
Mr. Gold also managed public relations for the former White Flint Mall and the Washington Diplomats of the now-defunct North American Soccer League. Walter also was a founder and owner of the Washington News Network, a broadcast production facility that served local news stations from around the country.
Walter leaves behind his loving wife Bobbie, his son Larry Gold, daughter Judy Bove, and cherished grandchildren Stacy and Ryan Bove.
Services have been entrusted to Sagel Bloomfield Danzansky Goldberg. There will be a graveside service at 1pm Sunday, October 18, 2020, at King David Memorial Gardens, 7482 Lee Hwy, Falls Church, VA.
